One of the amazing photographers we have the honour of working with is Laura Harding, owner of Laura Barclay Photography. She is an adventure elopement and wedding photographer based here in Calgary, Alberta, but is basically willing to go wherever there is amazing scenery and lots of adventure.
How did you get your start in the industry?
I actually kind of happened upon wedding photography. I was working as a sports and wildlife photographer when two close friends of mine asked me to photograph their intimate elopement. I hadn’t ever posed people before but hoped I could handle this, after all it was only the two of them and their parents. I ended up loving it! About a month later I had another couple contact me who were eloping at the same venue, and it just snowballed from there. As soon as I had few under my belt I realized how much I loved weddings!
Favourite things about what you do?
As an adventure elopement + intimate wedding photographer, I love getting to connect with couples that share my love of adventure and nature. Getting to be outside, and mix my love of landscapes and couples is truly a dream. Getting to work from home also allows me to take care of my energetic border collie, which is pretty awesome too!
If you were a wedding cake, what would you look like?
Neither my husband or I are super into cakes, so I’d probably hop on the “cheese” wedding cake trend. Literally a cake with different layers of cheese. YUM!
What is your favourite season?
Good lord I can’t pick a favourite season. I hate being cold but I think winter elopements are stunning! You can beat fall colours in Calgary, and who could possibly hate summer?
What inspires you?
I get inspired by traveling and experiencing different landscape and cultures. I try to tick something off my bucket list every year, and it is so rewarding to hit the road. I feel so fortunate to have been to 17 different countries, and each new place I travel gives me new appreciation for my job. I also get inspired by my couples and their connection. Each relationship is unique and I love discovering their quirks. I always try to bring that out in photos so that they truly represent who the couple are.
Tea of coffee?
I am a big tea drinker! I am super weird and can’t drink caffeine without getting very sick, so it is all decaf tea. Once and a while I will have a decaf latte though.
Glitter or confetti?
I definitely prefer confetti over glitter. Glitter bombing is a real thing, and I am not a fan! 🙂
Favourite things about working with Pop-ups?
My favourite thing about working with Pop-ups is getting to meet more couples who want a simple, intimate day, that truly reflects who they are as a couple. With pop-ups and elopements there are no rules. Make your day your own!
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of where I have brought my business to up until this point. After relocating from Toronto to Calgary, I managed to run a full time successful business after two years. It was daunting having to move and start over, but Calgary suits my love of adventure and wilderness! I have found more couples here that share my passions, and now couldn’t imagine living anywhere else!
Favourite guilty pleasure?
My favourite guilty pleasure is watching terrible teen shows on Netflix while I edit. I have always needed something on in the background while working or studying and it’s still true today. Lately the shows have been Vampire Diaries, Riverdale, and Gilmore Girls.
I will follow my instincts, be myself for good or ill, and see what will be the upshot. As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I'll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can. - John Muir
